How to Use Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaner: Do You Need It?

Are you using a DPF cleaner but don’t know how you can properly make use of it?

Under certain conditions, a DPF can become blocked, causing an engine fault code to display. In extreme cases, the blocked DPF will cause the vehicle to go into ‘limp’ mode. This will restrict your vehicle from being driven slowly, the intention being it will be taken either home or to a garage where the fault needs to be addressed urgently.

Either which, you don’t want this to happen.

Remember, ignoring a DPF warning light can result in loss of power, reduced fuel economy, poor throttle response, and difficulty starting. And it all starts with knowing whether or not your DPF filter is functioning the right way.

So if you’re thinking of getting a DPF cleaner, you need to know how to make use of it the right way. At DPF cleaning, let us show you how.

How to Use a DPF Cleaner

Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaner is designed to give your engine a good clean from the inside out. It is a chemical treatment that helps to reduce the soot emissions generated by your engine, regenerate the Diesel Particulate Filter, and clean away any existing soot particles.

It is a great way to clean your Diesel Particulate filter without having to remove and dismantle the filter itself and manually clean it by hand. It will increase the efficiency of the regeneration process, burning off more of the soot particles which collect in the filter and taking less time to do it.

This is particularly useful for drivers who use their vehicle mainly for short distances within the city and who therefore rarely rely on passive regeneration to clean the DPF in their vehicle.

The cleaner works extremely quickly, so you won’t have to sit around and wait to see fantastic results. It’s also easy to use too. All you have to do is pour the correct amount directly into your fuel tank just before you will up with diesel. It is then recommended that you drive for around 15 minutes on a stretch of a quiet road with a reasonably high-speed limit, trying to keep the revs at between 2 and 2.5 rpm. This will give the cleaner plenty of time to work its way to the DPF and to help to burn off any excess soot which has collected there.

The cleaner works best if you use it on an empty tank, and fill it up completely straight after you have poured in the cleaner.

What Causes A Blocked DPF?

Common causes of a blocked DPF can include too many short journeys where the regeneration processes have not initiated. In most cases, the blockage is a symptom of another problem such as a faulty DPF sensor, incorrect engine oil, or a failing turbo.

It is important to note that a blocked DPF is usually a symptom, not the fault. It is the result of a problem elsewhere with the engine. Cleaning a DPF should not be done in isolation: whatever is causing the blockage should always be addressed at the same time, or it will become blocked again very quickly.

This is not because the DPF cleaning process has failed, but because the cause has not been addressed. A diagnostic check, by a competent, trained professional such as a DCARB’s DPF Cleaning service, should be carried out and acted upon to ensure the fault is rectified.
