A DEFINITIVE GUIDE ON DPF CLEANING

Are you looking for a better way to clean your DPFs?
Here are some tips on how you can perform a thorough DPF cleaning on your diesel vehicles…

A Definitive Guide on DPF Cleaning

Did you know that you also need to thoroughly clean your DPFs?

More than anything else, your DPF should always be maintained clean. A clean DPF ensures your vehicle a good and smooth performance and also protects you and your passengers from getting polluted air inside.

Indeed, DPF cleaning is a necessary job to keep heavy-duty trucks on the road. The DPF is designed to remove the diesel particulate matter and soot from the exhaust of your truck. The ash that is left behind in the filter eventually builds up and reduces the effectiveness, thus requiring filter cleaning.

Today, let’s get to know how does a DPF works and along with it are top 5 tips in ensuring a clean DPF.

Hydrodynamic Cleaning

A Definitive Guide on DPF Cleaning

The diesel particulate filter captures particulate matter that is a normal byproduct of the combustion process as it passes through the exhaust system.

As you run your diesel engine, sensors in the DPF measure the amount of particulate matter that is accumulating in the filter and send that data to the Electronic Control Module (ECM), the computer that controls the engine and after treatment.

How to Clean DPF Thoroughly

Under normal operating conditions, you don’t need to do anything. However, if you do a lot of in-city driving at lower speeds or extended idling, your engine may not be working hard enough for the self-cleaning process to take place. If this happens, particulate matter will accumulate within the filter.

If it reaches an 80% level, you will see an alert in the information center of your truck’s overhead console. This is not dangerous, but it does tell you that the engine needs to be given a little more “exercise” which will correct the situation.

Drive Faster

Contrary to popular belief, driving faster could actually save you money in the long run. DPF regenerations can only occur when certain conditions are met such as speed, RPM and engine temperature. Unless all the conditions are met, the DPF regeneration process will not start and you’ll be one step closer to a costly dealer regen.

Do your homework, find out how fast you need to drive, for how long and at what RPM. Your dealer might not want to give you this information so we’d recommend reaching out to the online community and owners clubs for this.

Use The Right Oil

Under normal operating conditions, you don’t need to do anything. However, if you do a lot of in-city driving at lower speeds or extended idling, your engine may not be working hard enough for the self-cleaning process to take place. If this happens, particulate matter will accumulate within the filter.

If it reaches an 80% level, you will see an alert in the information center of your truck’s overhead console. This is not dangerous, but it does tell you that the engine needs to be given a little more “exercise” which will correct the situation.

Get Your EGR Valve Checked

Over time EGR valves can become blocked with the soot and carbon they are designed to recirculate. This in turn can cause the device to stick open or open for longer than it should, increasing particulates, soot and carbon to to be fed back into the engine.

A faulty EGR valve should illuminate the engine warning light but if you have experienced DPF issues in the past we’d suggest that you have it looked at before any further costly DPF regenerations.

At DCARB USA, we provide you all the vehicle assessments and checkups. Worry not about anything that involves DPF, we take care of you and your vehicle issues.

If the DPF warning light is on it is likely that your DPF is severely blocked and this is an urgent problem that could cause your car to overheat and your engine to ignite into flames. If your DPF warning light has come on you should contact DPF Solutions Sheffield straight away for assured piece of mind.
